Artist Talk:
Phantom Mirror Mangle is a compact collection of art that tracks the formal and conceptual evolution of Houston artist, Justin Varner from 2008 to the present. Beginning with his narrative charcoal drawings depicting Port Arthur, Texas, up to his current, graphic airbrush paintings of autobiographical objects and personal icons.
About The Artist: Justin Varner is a faculty member in the HCC Southeast Fine Arts Dept. He regularly teaches painting, drawing, and 2D Design. Varner received his MFA from Indiana University Bloomington and his BFA from Lamar University (Beaumont, TX). His work has been exhibited at Dishman Art Museum, Rudolph Blume Gallery, K Space Contemporary, Grunwald Gallery, and Lawndale Art Center. Additionally, Varner’s art has been featured in the prominent contemporary art magazine, New American Paintings.
