HCC Office of
International Initiatives and Honors College students hosted a panel discussion
about the film Cimarron Spirit (
http://loscimarrones.com). The panel, moderated by Dr. Roger Wood, included
Dr. Silvio Torres-Saillant from Syracuse University, Dr. Carl Lindahl and Dr.
Rachel Afi Quinn from University of Houston, and filmmakers Ruben Duran, Michael
Brims and Donna Pinnick. A drumming performance by Gabriel Bata introduced the event.
Videography by Luce Stephen form HCCTV.
In light of the
ongoing debates around the politics of Dominican racial identities, this discussion
of Afro-Dominican identity and culture expands the ideas that students,
scholars, and community members currently have about the African diaspora in
the Caribbean.
This panel discussion
was made possible with funding from the College Activities Board-Central Campus
and a production grant from the National
Endowment for the Arts.
