In celebration of Black History Month, the Dance Department of Houston Community College – Northwest hosted the annual “Akwaaba Dance and Drum Festival” February 26–28, 2015 at the Spring Branch campus.
“Akwaaba” means welcome in “twi” which is a language spoken by the Akan of Ghana, West Africa. The festival welcomes local and international performers who offer workshops and performances to HCC students and community members. Together, the performance artists, spectators and participants present a culmination of African art, music, dance, culture and food to the Houston community.
A closing performance was held Saturday night, February 28 in the Spring Branch Performing Arts Center featuring Houston’s very own Urban Souls Dance Company, Dallas Black Dance Theatre, and The Saakumu Dance Troupe, based in Ghana West Africa.
